DIY Fashion: ThreadBanger

Video Demo: Frugal Halloween Costumes | Fabulous Wicked Witch Costume

jackolanterns-lit

To kick off ThreadBanger's "Halloweeny Mayhem," Corinne and Rob bring you this exclusive 2008 interview with Tony Award Winning Costume Designer Susan Hilferty, costume designer for the hit musical Wicked.

Hilferty has a unique perspective and a masterful eye on "riffing" to make any costume unique. This short video should get your creative juices flowing and help you get fired up and inspired to start getting to work on your own DIY costumes.

ThreadBanger takes us backstage to see up close and personal a fascinating assortment of Wicked's costumes, and Hilferty shares her ideas on how to design and make some of them.

ThreadBanger: Interview with "Wicked" Costume Designer Susan Hilferty

Inspired by Susan Hilferty's Elphaba costume from Wicked, Corinne and Rob show you how to make a fantastic wicked witch ensemble for Halloween. We'll get you my pretty!!

While this DIY Halloween costume project will take more time to accomplish than other ThreadBanger projects typically do, this gorgeous witch's costume will ultimately be SO worth it in the end. And it will give you a huge savings over buying or renting something of similar quality.

If you can put in the time and effort to make this witch's outfit, this costume should be in satisfactory shape to wear for many Halloweens to come — an added bonus of frugality (and not something that lower-quality store-bought costumes can claim). The directions for making the witch's hat are about halfway through the video demo. The extremely cool witch hat — with an ample helping of panache — can be made with a minimum of alteration to be used with other costumes, such as wizards or sorcerers. A lot of fabric glue is used, so be sure to have enough on hand.
